There are many people who have low self-esteem. However, not all of them realize it or do something about it. The reasons why people develop low self-esteem are quite diverse. And each of those reason requires adequate focus, especially if the situation is to be reversed.
The most common causes of low self-esteem are:
- Neglect and abuse
People who get neglected and abused somehow feel that they are not important enough or worthy enough of the attention, love, and care that they deserve. As a result, they mistakenly think that they are far too inferior than the rest of the people.
Failures, whether at home, in school, at work, or among peers, can degrade a person. Regardless if the source of degradation is other people or his own self, failure could only result to that person thinking of himself as a loser who can never achieve anything.
Prejudice can be very dangerous, especially when directed towards an individual with a potentially low self esteem. Wrongly judging a person of what he can and cannot do can only deter his growth and full potential.
A person who is not appreciated in any other way could force him to think differently about himself. The absence of praises, interest, affection, and warmth are all going to affect a person’s view about his abilities. This only goes to show how important appreciation can really be.
- Being a misfit
A misfit is the person who is regarded as the odd one. And because he doesn’t seem to fit anywhere, he tends to be always by himself. Eventually, he will think of himself to be way different from all the rest. And that’s going to be the ultimate reason why his self esteem becomes low.
